INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON NATURAL DYES
Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University, Hyderabad, India is
organizing a 3 day “International Workshop on Natural Dyes” in
collaboration with National Agricultural Innovation Project, Indian Council of
Agricultural Research, New Delhi in the first week of March 2014 at
Hyderabad under NAIP sub-project „A Value Chain in Natural Dyes‟.
Theme of the Workshop : Natural dyes – Quality, Standards and
Certification
Tentative dates: 5
th to 7th March 2014
Venue: Hyderabad, India
Background of the Workshop
The demand for natural dyes has been increasing in the context of
environmental safety throughout the globe. In many of the world‟s
developing countries, however, natural dyes can offer not only a rich and
varied source of dyestuff, but also the possibility of an income through
sustainable harvest and sale of these dye plants. Natural dyes have a far
superior aesthetic quality which is much more pleasing to the eye. Wearing
a natural dyed textile gives a feeling of being with the nature which the
consumers are able to enjoy today. The advancements in natural dye
processing are able to address few limitations.
Even though natural dyes have been used for centuries, there are no
standards for certification of the natural dyed textile/products. The Global
Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) certifies the products made of 70%
organic fibres dyed with non azo dyes. There is no separate certification for
natural dyes. American Association for Textile Chemists and Colourists
(AATCC) has formulated standard test procedures for colourfastness to
sunlight, rubbing, perspiration, washing etc. But the association has not
come up with standard test procedures for identification and certification of
natural dyes. In view of the above, it is becoming difficult for both manufacturers
and buyers to differentiate natural dyed fabrics from the synthetic dyed
fabrics. Number of counterfeit textiles dyed with synthetic dyes to the
matching shades of natural dyes are in the market creating lot of confusion
to the buyer. Therefore, it is imperative to come up with identification
procedures and standards for certification of natural dyed products. It
requires lot of debating among the forum of experts and stakeholders by
including scientists from different countries (20 countries) and also
representatives of certifying bodies. Therefore it is proposed to convene an
international seminar which may become initial platform for interaction
among the natural dye expert groups.
Even though natural dyes are in forefront due to the ban on use of
certain synthetic dyes, no specific workshop has been conducted to bring
them together. Lot of research repetitions are found which needs to be
minimized to give scope for advanced research in the gaps identified.
Therefore, this workshop is organized to bring all the scientists and
stakeholders on a single platform to facilitate development globally in the
field of natural dyes and thus contribute to environmental protection. The
main topics covered under this workshop are:
Broad Topics:
New sources of Natural Dyes
New technologies in extraction and processing of dyes
New technologies in the dyeing process
New technologies and methodologies in the application of natural
dyes to textiles
Improvement in fastness properties of Natural dyes
Antimicrobial and UV properties of Natural dyes
Medicinal and Cosmetic effects of Natural dyes
Functional properties of Natural dyes
Special finishes for natural dye products
Biotechnological aspects of natural dyes
Nano technological aspects of natural dyes Identification,Testing and quality control
Costing of natural dyes
Labeling
Certification
Marketing network in domestic and export markets
Eminent scientists and experts from different countries in the field of
natural dyes will deliver invited lectures. Artisans engaged in production of
different natural dye products will demonstrate and show case their talents.
Along with invited lectures selected oral and poster presentations will be
organized.
Abstracts of the Research papers (soft or hard copy) are invited from
Scientists and also stakeholders in the field of natural dyes under the
broader topics mentioned above as per the time schedule given below:
