Formal Education
EE in schools and institutes of higher learning has been a thrust of work at CEE since its inception. In the area of school education, CEE works to awaken interest, raise awareness and provide information and knowledge among children, about environment in all its aspects, taking children towards action to improve the environment; and develops, produces and disseminates prototype material and programmes covering a wide range of environment and development themes. While CEE works directly in many schools, it facilitates teaching-learning of environment in schools through networking and partnerships. CEE has played an important role in mainstreaming EE and ESD in the school curriculum through participation in development of syllabi for EE, textbook development to infuse EE at the national level, with several state boards and other publishers of textbooks, orienting key persons in the education sector, and building partnerships for strengthening ESD in school education.
Higher education programmes of the Centre are based on the recognition to the need to extend ESD to college students who are on the threshold of becoming active participants in society as citizens, decision makers and leaders. The Universities are seen as the hub for Knowledge networks linking higher education institutions with communities, NGOs, schools and other stakeholder groups, to explore solutions for locale-specific sustainability related issues. Activities include development of teaching-learning material, courses, faculty orientation programmes, specialized workshops, student research, internships and pre-service teacher education on Environment and Development.
Youth in Sustainable Development
Youth constitute more than 40 per cent of India’s population and therefore they are critical as drivers of change. CEE’s programmes at local, national, South Asia and International levels include capacity building of youth to take on this role. CEE’s programmes seek to make youth aware of environment and development realities.  CEE facilitates their involvement in taking action for improving their immediate environment by helping the youth make environmentally correct lifestyle choices. Centre’s youth programmes are offered through formal and non-formal approaches and reach out to youth in the country as well as in the region. CEE hosts the Secretariat and is the India National Focal Point for the South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN), supported by UNEP.

Since the year 2000, CEE has been the National Host Institution for the Small Grants Programme (SGP) funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), UNDP. SGP continues to support initiatives which demonstrate community based innovative gender-sensitive participatory approaches and lessons that reduce threats to the local and global environment.
SGP India supports demand-led local area and community based action projects country-wide. The emphasis is on establishing low-cost, low-external input and easy to manage technology and social mechanisms to enhance livelihoods.

Resource Mobilisation and Management
Project Management is a part of all programmes and activities of the Centre. Generating projects, writing proposals and fund raising is an activity conducted by all Coordinators in CEE. However, opportunities for developing large proposals, which are multi-group and at institutional level, need to be identified, captured and incubated before it gets to a programme team. At CEE, the Director’s Office and a special group called the Futures Group, are involved in this activity.
Waste and Resource Management
CEE has worked on the issue of solid waste management since 1992. CEE’s initiative, which started as a small activity in Bangalore and nearby districts as demonstration projects, has been able to demonstrate a sustainable model for integrating the best environmental concepts and practices such as reducing wastage, maximizing reuse and encouraging eco-friendly recycling along with community participation, involvement of the local government, philanthropic and commercial organizations and vulnerable and disadvantaged communities. It has set up plastic and paper waste recycling units which involve women and unemployed youth in developing products out of recyclable paper and plastic and help them in sale of the products developed. CEE is also working closely with the government and healthcare establishments in the area of biomedical waste management. Activities include setting up of systems for the management and disposal of biomedical waste. One of the most recent initiatives under this area includes working with issues in e-waste management.

Disaster Preparedness and Rehabilitation
Since the Gujarat earthquake in 2001, CEE has initiated programmes for the people affected by natural disasters. Starting with post earthquake Rebuilding Hope programme, CEE has worked in this area after the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, as well as the earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir in 2007. The approach of having a long-term intervention in these areas is to work with and capacity-build communities to become more disaster-resilient and cope better. These programmes, after fulfilling immediate needs of shelter, provisions, etc., ultimately look at strengthening livelihood opportunities and addressing environmental and development problems at a larger scale, which involves different stakeholders working together on long-term basis. CEE’s work has been in keeping with the international frameworks and developments in Disaster Risk Reduction.
