Ravenshaw University – AIPH, Master of Public Health Programme (RU-AIPH MPH)
Master of Public Health (MPH) Public health is a discipline devoted to preventing diseases and promoting health in the human population. The threats challenging the health of the public include a variety of acute and chronic diseases and conditions including AIDS, addiction, obesity, and aging and some pervasive conditions based on gender, race, socioeconomics, and level of education. Master study in public health has a singular purpose: to train leaders in public health who are armed with the skills to conduct research, bring about policy change, and positively affect the health of populations.
About the RU-AIPH MPH Programme (India-USA collaboration for quality Public Health Professionals)
The Ravenshaw University (RU) in collaboration with Asian Institute of Public Health (AIPH) offers the Master in Public Health (MPH) degree. AIPH also has a special understanding with the College of Public Health at University of Nebraska Medical Centre (UNMC), Omaha, USA to run collaborative educational and research programmes in Public Health. As part of an institutional Memorandum of Understanding between UNMC and AIPH, UNMC College of Public Health offers six core courses in public health leading to a UNMC Public Health Certificate. This certificate is currently a part of the MPH course offered by RU-AIPH. The Ravenshaw University-AIPH joint MPH Program accepts these six courses (18 credits) in its curriculum as partial fulfilment of requirement (60 credits of course work and 20 credits of thesis research) towards the MPH degree taught locally over a two year period.
The program is divided into four semesters. In the third semester, students take elective courses worth a minimum of six credits besides the courses mentioned above. The fourth semester is mainly devoted to research work, where a student conducts original research work on a chosen topic under the guidance of an AIPH/US mentor. The course yields a total credit of eighty hours, each credit hour comprising of 15 hours of active interaction between the teacher and the student.
The need of Public Health Education in India: The Government of India in collaboration with various international agencies such as United Nations Organizations (UNICEF, World Health Organization, UNFPA etc.), overseas development departments for example USAID, DFID, GIZ etc. and the constituent state governments have unambiguously prioritized the improvement of the health of the Indian citizens; which has resulted in unprecedented scaling up and massive investment in health programmes such as National Rural Health Mission country-wide. During this scaling up process what has become evident that a country like India would need many more public health professionals to efficiently utilize the surge in investment in this social sector. RU-AIPH is a small response to bridge this demand-supply gap in the profession of public health.
Acquired skills and competencies at the end of the course
As a post graduate student in Master of Public Health (MPH), a successful professional is expected to have the following skills and competencies at the end of the course:
 Assessing health needs of individual and the community, and determining community capacities to meet these needs, especially in the resource poor settings of developing countries.  Planning and implementing effective community-based health intervention and education programmes based on evidence based and community oriented concepts.  Evaluating the effectiveness of public health programmes by applying appropriate quantitative and qualitative research techniques.  Acting as resource persons in disseminating public health principles.
