Departments offering PhD:

Eligibility:

M.Tech./ ME degree in relevant discipline.
Candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering with marks not below 75% marks (or CGPA/ CPI of 7.5 on a 10-point scale) may be considered for admission. However, a valid GATE score is needed (the waiver for IIT graduates as mentioned in the notes above for the M.Tech. programme applies).
Candidates with M.Sc. degree must satisfy each of the following criteria: (a) a minimum of 65 percent marks/ 6.5 CGPA/ CPI in the M.Sc. degree, (b) first division in B.Sc. degree, and (c) JRF/ 95 percentile or higher in GATE.

How to Apply:

All applications for admission (except Computer Science & Engineering department) are to be sent by post. There is no provision for online submission of application forms (except Computer Science & Engineering department).
Computer Science & Engineering department's applicants need to apply through online application process at http://admissions.cse.iitk.ac.in/

PhD applicants must submit two letters of reference letters as well. The reference letters can directly be sent by the referees to the DPGC (Department Post Graduate Committee) convener of the concerned department or they can also be sent in a sealed envelope along with the application form.

The application fee is Rs.400/- for General and OBC candidates and Rs.200/- for SC/ ST and all PD candidates (including General and OBC).
The application fee is waived for 'Foreign National' candidates. The fee must be paid through a demand draft in favour of 'The Registrar, IIT Kanpur’ and payable at Kanpur.

Selection Process:

Selection of PhD students is done through interview and scores in qualifying examination.
