Fellowships @ University Grants Commission, New Delhi

Scholarships
  1. Emeritus Fellowship
    Fellowship Details:
    1. The number of slots available under the Scheme are 100 for Science streams and 100 for Humanities, Social Sciences and Languages (total 200 Slots) at any one given time basis.
    2. Honorarium of Rs.31000/- per month from UGC for two years (non-extendable)
    3. Contingency grant (Non-lapsable) of Rs.50000/- per annum towards secretarial assistance, travel within the country connected with the research project, stationery, postage, consumables, books and journals and equipments. However 3 books and journals and equipments etc. procured out of the contingency grant will be the property of the university/ college/ institute.
    4. Foreign visit in connection with the approved research work of the awardee will be limited to once in a year with the prior approval/ no-objection of the Institution/ University where the project work is being undertaken along with that of UGC. This will be further subject to no financial liability on the part of UGC.
    5. The expenditure would be accounted for audit by the university department concerned like any other departmental expenditure. The Emeritus Fellow would be entitled to such other privileges including medical facilities as available to the university faculty members, but not housing.

    Eligibility:
    • The eligibility will be based on the quality of research and published work contributed by the teacher in his/ her service career. The awardee (superannuated) can work under this scheme with a well defined time bound action plan up to the age of 70 years or up to two years (non-extendable) of the award whichever is earlier.
    • Highly qualified and experienced, superannuated or likely to be superannuated within 6 months, teachers of recognized universities/ colleges/ institutions.

  2. Dr.S.Radhakrishanan Postdoctoral Fellowship of Humanities and Social Sciences including languages
    Fellowship Details:
    • The numbers of slots available under the scheme are 200 per year.
    • The financial assistance available under the scheme is as follows:
      Fellowship@Rs.38800 – 1st year
      @Rs.40300 – 2nd year
      @Rs.41900 - 3rd year
      Contingency A@Rs.50000 per annum for three years
      Escorts/ Reader assistance@Rs.2000/- per month (fixed) in case of physically disabled candidates
    • HRA includes accommodation in hostel recognized/ maintained by the institutions may be reimbursed the hostel fee, excluding mess, electricity, water charges, etc. A certificate to this effect is to be furnished through the Registrar/ Director /Principal. If Post-Doctoral Fellow makes his/ her own arrangements of accommodation, he/ she may be entitled to draw HRA as per categorization of the cities by the Government of India. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will submit a certificate for this purpose to the UGC for claiming HRA through the concerned University/ Institution/ College.

    Eligibility:
    • The candidate must have a doctorate degree in the relevant subject.
    • General/ open category, 55% marks at UG level and 60% of marks at PG level. For reserved categories (SC/ ST/ OBC/ PH) candidates, 50% at UG level and 55% at PG level.
    • The fellowship is open for full time research work to young researchers below 35 years of age (Relaxation of 5 years for SC/ ST/ OBC/ Women candidates).
    • Candidate must identify a Guide for his/ her postdoctoral research work and obtain his/ her consent for the guidance. Highly qualified and experienced, superannuated or likely to be superannuated within 6 months, teachers of recognized universities/ colleges/ institutions.

  3. Post Doctoral Fellowship for Women
    Fellowship Details:
    • The numbers of slots available under the scheme are 100 per year
    • The tenure of the award is five years with no provision for further extension.

    • The upper age limit for applicants is 55 years for the candidates belonging to general/open category and 60 years for SC/ ST/ OBC/ PH/ Minority communities, as on 1st July on the year of application.

    Fellowship Details:
    • The numbers of slots available under the scheme are 100 per year The tenure of the award is two years with no provision for further extension.

If Post-Doctoral Fellow makes his/ her own arrangements of accommodation, he/ she may be entitled to draw HRA as per categorization of the cities by the Government of India. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will submit a certificate for this purpose to the UGC for claiming HRA through the concerned University/ Institution/ College.

    Eligibility:
    • The candidate must have a doctorate degree in the relevant subject preferably with published research work to their credit.
    • The upper age limit for male applicants is 50 years as on 1st July of the year of application, and 55 years in the case of female candidates. In exceptional cases, the age may be relaxed.
    • Selection will be made on the basis of merit through Interface Mode by an Expert Committee constituted especially for the purpose.

  5. Rajiv Gandhi National fellowship for Person with Disability
    Fellowship Details:
    • The scheme caters total number of 200 Fellowship [Junior Research Fellows (JRF)] per year to students with disabilities.
    • The scheme covers all universities/ an institution recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Non-Universities/ Institutions and is implemented by the UGC itself on the pattern of the scheme of UGC Fellowship being awarded to research students pursuing M.Phil. and PhD.
    • These fellowships will be available to students with disabilities who are covered under The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995. Thus, a person with disability who wishes to avail the benefit under the Act has to obtain a disability certificate from the medical authority notified for the purpose.

    Eligibility:
    • Any student with disabilities who has been admitted to M.Phil./ PhD degree in a University or academic institution by completing the required formalities for admission in that University or academic institution is eligible for the award of Fellowship, subject to provision of the scheme as per the advertisement of UGC. The candidate must get himself/herself registered for M.Phil./ PhD at the first available opportunity but not later than within a period of two years from the receipt of award letter. This period is not extendable. However, the actual payment of fellowship will be made with effect from the date of joining only.
    • After two years, if the progress in the research works of the awardee is found satisfactory, his/her tenure will be extended for a further period of three years as Senior Research Fellowship (SRF). The research work will be assessed by a three member committee set up by the University. The committee will consist of the Supervisor, Head of the Department and one outside expert in the subject. JRF may be terminated in case the progress of the candidate is not found satisfactory by the committee. The SRF shall be sanctioned on year to year basis on the recommendation of the Supervisor of the candidate duly accepted/rejected by the Head of the Department and finally approved by the Vice-Chancellor. The total period of award of JRF and SRF shall not exceed a period of five years. The fellowship is paid from the date of registration of the students in M.Phil./ PhD course.
    • The students with disabilities once considered eligible for the fellowship shall not be entitled to any other benefits from Central or State Government or any other body like UGC offering similar benefit to avoid duplication and increase coverage. Only those doing regular and full time M.Phil./ PhD course of a University/ Research Institution shall be eligible for the fellowship. Employees of any University/ College/ Educational Institution/ Central/ State/ UT Government shall be excluded from availing Fellowship, even if they are on Study Leave or EOL to pursue the M.Phil./ PhD course.

  6. Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minority Students
    Fellowship Details:
    • The objective of the Fellowship is to provide integrated five year fellowships in the form of financial assistance to students from minority communities, as notified by the Central Government to pursue higher studies such as M.Phil. and PhD.
    • The Fellowship will cover all Universities/Institutions recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) and section 3 of the UGC Act along with those which are not under the purview of UGC and will be implemented by the Ministry of Minority Affairs through UGC for students belonging to the minority communities. The fellowship under Maulana Azad National Fellowship for minority students will be on the pattern of UGC Fellowships awarded to research students pursuing regular and full time M.Phil. and PhD courses. The fellowship holders under this Fellowship will be known as Ministry of Minority Affairs scholars.
    • These are integrated five year fellowships for M.Phil. and PhD subject to academic criteria in force for selection to PhD programme. The duration of fellowship is as under:

    Eligibility:
    A candidate has to fulfill the following conditions to be eligible for award of this fellowship
    • He/ she should belong to one of the minority communities notified under Section 2 (c) of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.
    • He/ she should get admission and registration for regular and full time M.Phil./PhD courses in University/Academic Institution by fulfilling conditions of admission of that University/ Institution, subject to provisions of the Fellowship as per advertisement of UGC.
    • The minority community students once considered eligible for the fellowship shall not be entitled to benefits under any other source, Central or State Government or any other body like UGC for the same study.
    • Prior clearance of NET/ SLET examination will not be a prerequisite for award of Maulana Azad National Fellowship for minority students for M.Phil./ PhD.
    • In order to qualify for the award of JRF/ SRF the UGC norms would be applicable at pre-M.Phil. and pre-PhD stage, respectively, including the minimum score of 50% at post graduate level.

  7. National Fellowship for OBC Candidate
    Fellowship Details:
    • The tenure of fellowship is initially for two years under the NF Scheme. Before expiry of this period, the work of the Fellow will be evaluated by a Committee of three members comprising of Head of the Department, Supervisor and one outside subject expert to be constituted by the concerned Department of the /University/Institution/College. If the research work is found satisfactory, his/her tenure will be extended further for a period of three years under the enhanced emoluments of the National Fellowship Senior Research Fellowship (NFSRF).

    • House rent allowance: Suitable single-seated hostel accommodation may be provided to NJRF candidate in the University/Institution/College. In case of non-availability, HRA as per rules of the university/ institution/ college will be paid to the Fellow subject to the submission of an HRA certificate through the Registrar/Director/Principal. National Fellowship Junior Research Fellow provided with accommodation in a hostel recognized/maintained by the institutions may be reimbursed the hostel fee, excluding mess, electricity, water charges, etc. A certificate to this effect is to be furnished through the Registrar/Principal (Annexure II). If the fellow makes his/her own arrangements of accommodation, he/she may be entitled to draw HRA as per categorization of the cities by the Government of India. The fellow will submit a certificate for the purpose to the UGC for claiming HRA through the concerned University/Institution/College.

    Eligibility:
    • The candidate should belong to OBC and should have passed the Post Graduate examination and annual income of the beneficiary/ parents or guardian of the beneficiary not exceeds Rs. 6.00 lakh per annum from all sources.
    • The candidate who is already registered for M.Phil./ PhD will be eligible for the consideration for award of fellowship under cited scheme.
    • The selection will be made on the basis of merit of the candidates. However, the actual payment of fellowship will be made directly to awardee through e-payment under DBT with effect from 1 st April of selection/ financial year (or) from the date of Registration under M.Phil./ PhD (or) from the date of joining in M.Phil./ PhD Programme, whichever is later.
    • Unemployed OBC Candidates who have passed the Post Graduate examination in concerned subject and who desire to pursue full-time research without JRF of UGC-NET or UGC-CSIR NET.
