Candidates shall be admitted the program under following category:
(i) Full Time Regular: A student in this category works full-time for his/ her Ph. D. degree. He/ She receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/ UGC or any other recognized funding agency. (Candidate must have Valid GATE/ NET Score for MHRD scholarship as per rules notified time to time).
(ii) Full Time Sponsored: A candidate in this category is sponsored by recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on full-time basis. He/ she must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in relevant field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/ fellowship to such candidate.
(iii) Part Time Self Sponsored (External): This category refers to the candidates employed in R&D organization/ academic institution/ Industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree shall be carried out largely in the parent organization but with overall guidance provided by faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the department in which he/ she is enrolled. He/ she must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least two years of professional experience in the relevant field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/ fellowship to such candidate.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
Candidates with following qualification shall be eligible for admission to the Ph. D. Programme of the Institute.
For Engineering, Technology and Architecture Departments:
(a) Candidates possessing M. Tech./ M. E./ M. Sc. (Engg.)/ M. Arch or equivalent Degree in relevant branch from a recognized University/ Institute with minimum 60% marks (or a CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale) in the qualifying examination shall be considered for admission in the departments as per their Specialization only.
(b) Candidates possessing B. Tech./ B. E./ B. Sc. (Engg.)/ B. Arch or equivalent Degree in relevant branch from a recognized University/ Institute with minimum 75% marks (or a CGPA of 8.25 in 10 point scale) in all (from 10th onward) examinations including qualifying examination may be considered in exceptional cases after approval of DRC. Such candidates must have professional/ research experience of at least ten years in reputed Institutions/ Organizations.
For Science Departments:
Candidates possessing Master’s Degree in the area of Science from a recognized University/ Institute with minimum 60% marks (or a CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale) in the qualifying examinations shall be considered for admission in the departments as per their Specialization only.
For Science, Humanities & Social Science Departments1:
Candidates possessing Master’s Degree in the area of English or Economics from a recognized University/ Institute with minimum 55% marks (or a CGPA of 6.0 in 10 point scale) in the qualifying examinations shall be considered for admission in the departments as per their Specialization only. Admission Procedure and Other Details:
Admission for Ph. D Program through Institute admission Test and Interview as detailed below shall be based on merit as decided on overall academic performance, written examination and followed by interview.
Candidates’ name with application Number, fulfilling minimum eligible criterion for admission to the respective department and program will be displayed on the Institute website as per admission schedule.
The written examination/ interview will be conducted by the Examination section and Admission Committee of respective department in association with experts from respective departments.
Admission shall be based on merit prepared after written test and Interview as detailed below, and subject to verification of documents, original certificates.
Important Information for all Candidates
i) Any candidate may apply online for any one department, even if eligibility from multiple disciplines/ specialisations at Bachelor’s/ Master’s level may be considered for admission to any program.
ii) A candidate is required to appear for Admission Test and Interview for only that department for which he/ she have applied.
iii) Application number allotted to each candidate will be their Roll No. for any future reference.
iv) No separate acknowledgment or call letter will be sent by the institute for attending the admission test/ interview/ Counselling.

v) No separate Admit Card will be issued for the admission Test, hence the candidates are directed to bring any standard Photo I-Card (in Original) with a photocopy thereof such as PAN Card, EPIC, Driving License, I-card issued by their Employer, or any Govt./ Public Sector Organization etc.
vi) Candidates reporting without any slandered I-Card (in original) as stated above shall not be allowed to appear at admission Test.
vii) Candidates must report in the Institute at least 30 minutes before start of admission Test else they will not be allowed to appear at the written Test.
viii) Candidates are advised to visit the Institute website www.nitp.ac.in for regular update.
ix) The name of the short listed candidates shall also be displayed on the Institute website.
x) The candidates whose application has been reject on any ground may immediately contact by email admission@nitp.ac.in or submitting application with sufficient details/ justification to the Academic Section.
xi) Candidate shall be considered for written examination/ interview even if the result of the qualify examination is awaited. If selected, such candidates will be allowed to join the programme provisionally, only if he/ she submit a certificate on the date of written examination/ interview from the Principal/ Registrar of his/ her College/ Institute stating that the candidate has completed all course requirements for obtaining the qualifying degree on the date of the issue of the certificate. However, mark sheet of qualifying examination with requisite marks or equivalent CGPA must be submitted to the office of Dean (Academics) on or before the admission, failing which will lead to cancellation of admission.
xii) Admission Written Test questions:
a. Admission Written Test will be of full marks 100 and of two hours duration.
b. Syllabus for the admission Test shall be as per GATE/ NET 2013 examination for respective department/ specialization.
c. Written Admission Test shall have Objective Type multiple choice/ option type questions only. The question paper shall have 25% questions to test candidate’s general analytic ability and aptitude to undertake research and 75% shall be from General Engineering/ Technology/ Science/ Humanities (as per respective department’s Specializations) to test the Knowledge in the field/ Specializations in which candidate desires to be get admitted.
d. The Objective question shall have negative marking. For each wrong answer ¼th of the marks allotted for that question shall be deducted.
e. Question paper for admission test for Ph. D program shall be different for each department.
f. Selection in Computer Sc. & Engineering and Information Technology department(s) shall be done by Common admission Test, and interview shall be conducted by common board of expert(s). However question papers for Ph. D program will be different in admission test.
xiii) Interview: Candidates securing minimum 40% marks (i.e. 40 marks out of full marks 100) in Admission Written Test will only be eligible for interview.
xiv) Admission Merit list: Candidates securing minimum 60% over all marks in Academic record, written Test and Interview shall only be considered for admission to the program and will be notified on Institute website. The selected candidates are required to report for admission by due date and time. No separate selection letter will be sent to any candidate.
xv) No extension of time for admission reporting shall be allowed. If any candidate does not report for admission by due date, then his/ her selection shall stand cancelled and seat will be given to the next candidate from the waiting list.

Full Marks of 100 and minimum 40 Marks in Written Test is essential to become eligible to appear for Interview
Scholarship & Financial Assistance for Ph. D. Program:
Candidates admitted to Ph. D Program under full time category shall as per eligibility for scholarship of the Ministry of HRD Govt. of India. However Sponsored category candidates are not eligible for any Scholarship/ assistantship etc.
The candidates admitted to Ph. D. program during session 3013-14 shall be eligible for scholarship of MHRD, if the candidate in
i. Science and humanities department have Master’s degree in relevant branch with Valid NET Score and
ii. Engineering/ Technology and Planning departments/ program, have Master’s degree in relevant branch and had been admitted to master’s program based on GATE Score or are having Valid GATE score on the date of application.
Financial Assistance under TEQUIP (equivalent to MHRD) to Doctoral candidates admitted to Doctoral Program, who do not have valid GATE Score or had not been admitted to Master’s Degree based on GATE Score (i.e. on only % marks of Bachelor’s Degree shall be awarded scholarship equivalent to MHRD as per provisions under TEQUIP. Documents required for verification during Interview:
(i) The candidates are required to bring following documents at the time of written Examination/ interview:
a. High School Certificate in original.
b. Mark sheets of qualifying examination in original.
c. Character Certificate issued by the Head of the institution last attended/ from employer.
d. Certificate of sponsorship in the prescribed format (if applicable).
e. No. Objection certificate from employer (if applicable).
(ii) The candidates are required to bring following documents at the time of admission:
a. Passport size Photographs (4 Nos.).
b. Two set of Self attested copies of all the above documents listed above.
c. Admission letter if any issued by the Institute/ verified document/ Admit Card used for Admission Test.

After Submitting the application online, the same is to be downloaded and the signed hard-copy along with recent photograph and self-attested relevant certificates, document and Statement of Purpose must be sent to the following address on or before the last date of submission. 3. Application fee of Rs. 1000/- for General/ OBC/ Sponsored category and Rs. 500/- for SC/ ST/ PH in the form of DD drawn in favour of National Institute of Technology Patna Payable at Patna, must accompany with the Hard copy of the online application submitted as stated above, else application shall be rejected.
4. Applicants from SC/ ST/ PH category must enclose Certificate issued by competent authority to claim relaxation in application Fee.
