Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) invites application for JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (JRF) AND RESEARCH ASSOCIATES (RA) tenable at Space Physics Laboratory (SPL) of VSSC from motivated candidates below the age of 28 years for JRF and below the age of 35 years for RA as per details given below:
Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram is one of the lead Centres of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

SPACE PHYSICS LABORATORY, VSSC

Space Physics Laboratory (SPL), a pioneer institution dedicated for research in different disciplines of Atmospheric, Space, and Planetary Sciences, offers excellent and challenging research opportunities in various fields including Physics, Chemistry and Dynamics of surface, lower, middle, and upper atmosphere-ionosphere and their coupling processes, Aerosols, Clouds, Space Weather phenomena, and Lunar and Planetary Explorations.
SPL is involved in major space and atmospheric science programmes of the country, such as Chandrayaan, Mars Mission, Youthsat, Megha-tropiques, ISRO-Geosphere Biosphere Programme, etc.  Well-equipped laboratories and major experimental facilities are available exclusively for these studies, besides access to the scientific data from ISRO’s and other satellites.  SPL also co-ordinates major experimental campaigns, at national and international level, using balloons, aircrafts, rockets, and research ship cruises, and is a leading contributor to India’s polar research programme. In the case of JRFs, the research work carried out by them will lead to Ph.D Degree.
Applications will be received on-line only.  The application format for on-line registration is available in the website http://www.vssc.gov.in from 1000 hours on ­­­­­­­­­­­10.10.2013 to 1700 hours on ­­­­­­­­­­­24.10.2013. Based on online application, initial screening will be conducted to short-list the candidates for taking up written test/interview. The written test (only for JRF) is tentatively scheduled on 23.11.2013 at Thiruvananthpuram. The call letter for written test/interview will be sent to the short-listed candidates by e-mail or can be downloaded from the VSSC website on or after 12.11.2013. The result of the written test for the position of JRF will be announced the same day itself in the VSSC website and interview will be conducted on the very next day.
Eligibility:

First Class M.Sc. Degree in Physics/Applied Physics/Atmospheric Science/Meteorology/Space Science/Planetary Sciences/Astronomy & Astrophysics with minimum 60% marks as average of all semesters or CGPA/CPI grading of 6.5 on a 10 point scale or equivalent. Those who are slated to complete the M.Sc. course in the academic year 2012-2013 are also eligible to apply provided final year mark list (satisfying the eligibility criteria) is to be produced at the time of selection.Ph.D in Science (Physics/Applied Physics/Atmospheric Science/Meteorology/Space Science/Planetary Sciences/Astronomy & Astrophysics).
Age Limit

Selection Process

Pay and Allowances
The Fellowship is initially for a period of ONE YEAR and is renewable annually for a total period of FIVE years.  There will be a review of the activity before renewal.  As of now, the Fellowship carries an amount of ` 16,000 per month, which might be increased to ` 18,000/- after completion of two years. Candidates are also eligible for HRA as admissible to regular employees of VSSC.` 22000 as fellowship per month
    General Conditions: 
  1. Candidates will have to produce proof of the details furnished in their applications submitted on-line as and when required.
  2. VSSC will not be responsible for bouncing-off of e-mail hall tickets/call letters.
  3. Necessary information regarding written examination, downloading of written test hall tickets and interview call letters will also be hosted in the VSSC website from time to time. Therefore, the candidates are advised to visit the website from time to time.
  4. Applicants are also advised to keep checking their email from time to time and particularly 2-3 days before the date of written examination for any updates.
  5. Only short listed candidates will be called for Written Test/Interview.
  6. Outstation candidates called for Interview will be paid to and fro Second Class Railway Fare by the shortest route including reservation/sleeper charges on production of proof of journey such as Railway Tickets, Bus tickets etc.  If the candidates travel in a higher class of accommodation than the one prescribed, only Second Class rail fare excluding the reservation charges/sleeper charges will be paid.
  7. If any information furnished on-line is found to be incorrect or false on verification, the candidate will not be interviewed and Travelling Allowance will not be paid.
  8. The Centre reserves the right not to fill up the position, if it so decides.
  9. Only Indian Nationals need apply.
  10. No interim correspondence will be entertained.
  11. Canvassing in any form will be a disqualification.

Upon registration, applicants will be provided with an on-line Registration Number, which should be carefully preserved for future reference. E-mail ID of the applicant will have to be given in the application compulsorily.
  • Payment of Application Fee : There will be an Application Fee of Rs.100/- (Rupees One Hundred Only) for each application. After registration of application on-line, the candidates have to down-load and print the personalized payment challan form, in triplicate, from the ISRO system which will contain the Name of the candidate, Registration Number, Receipt Account Number, Advertisement No., and Post Code. The candidates may visit the nearest branch of State Bank of India for remittance of application fee to Receipt Account (account number will be published in the website), by using the personalized payment challan of State Bank of India on any day between 12-02-2013 and 05-03-2013. The candidates may down-load and print the personalized payment challan from the ISRO system on any day between 12-02-2013 and 04-03-2013 and remit the application fee before the prescribed last date i.e., 05-03-2013. Upon remittance of the application fee, one copy of the challan form will be retained by State Bank [Bank copy] and remaining two parts will be given to the candidate. Applications, in respect of which copy of challan form, after remittance of prescribed application fee [ISRO copy] is not received in ISRO HQ, Bangalore on or before 11-03-2013, will not be considered for further processing under any circumstances.
  • Women; Scheduled Castes (SC); Scheduled Tribes (ST); Ex-serviceman [EX] and Persons with Disabilities (PWD) candidates are exempted from payment of Application Fee. However, after registration of application on-line, the candidates have to down-load and print the personalized registration confirmation form, in duplicate, from the ISRO system which will contain the Name of the candidate, Registration Number, Advertisement No., and Post Code. Out of the two personalized registration confirmation form, the candidates have to send one part of the form [ISRO copy] alongwith a certificate indicated against each category, as below, to Sr. Administrative Officer (ICRB), ISRO Headquarters, Antariksh Bhavan, New BEL Road, Bangalore -560 094 by post superscribing on the envelope "ICRB - RECRUITMENT OF SCIENTIST/ENGINEER 'SC'" within 7 days of filing of application and in any case not later than 11-03-2013. The remaining one copy of registration confirmation form [Applicant copy] shall be retained by the candidate for future reference.

  • Women Candidate - Gender certificate issued by the Principal of the College where last studied or Attested copy of PAN Card/Voter's ID Card/College ID Card/Passport/Driving License/Ration Card.

    SC/ST candidates - Attested copy of Caste Certificate

    Persons with disabilities(PWD) - Attested copy of Medical Certificate indicating extent of disability issued by Medical Board

    Ex-Servicemen - Attested copy of Discharge Certificate

  • Applications, in respect of which the above certificates are not received alongwith a copy of the registration confirmation form [ISRO copy] on or before 11-03-2013 will not be considered for further processing under any circumstances.
  • Those candidates who are already employed under Central/State Government, Public Sector Undertakings or Autonomous Bodies have to send a `No Objection Certificate' from the employer concerned, duly indicating their Registration Number and Post Code to Sr. Administrative Officer (ICRB), ISRO Headquarters, Antariksh Bhavan, New BEL Road, Bangalore -560 094 within 7 days of filing of application and in any case not later than 11-03-2013.
Selection Process:
    The candidate should have First Class with minimum 65% marks in the Qualifying Degree ie, BE/B.Tech or equivalent for submission of application on line. Please note that the qualification prescribed is the MINIMUM requirement and the same does not automatically make candidates eligible for written test. Based on the academic performance and bio-data, initial screening will be conducted to short-list candidates for taking-up written test. The written test will be conducted on 05-05-2013(Sunday) at ten venues viz Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Thiruvananthapuram. However, the Organisation reserves the right to cancel/change the written test venue and re-allot the candidates to any other test centre. The call letters for the written test to the short-listed candidates will be sent only by e-mail during second/third week of April 2013. Based on the performance of the candidates in the Written Test, candidates will be short-listed for interview. The schedule and venue of the interview will be notified separately to the shortlisted candidates only. Candidates attending the interview will be reimbursed to and fro second-class train fare by the shortest route from the city indicated in the online application form to the place of interview (change of address and city for the purpose will not be entertained).
Pay and Allowances:
    Selected candidates will be appointed as Scientist/Engineer 'SC' in the pay band of Rs. 15600-39100 with grade pay of Rs. 5400/-. The gross emoluments in the minimum of pay band will at present be approximately Rs. 36,120/-p.m. In addition, House Rent Allowance [HRA] and Transport Allowance at the prescribed rates in force at the place of posting will be paid for those who are not availing Departmental Housing and Transport facility, respectively. The employees will be governed by the New Pension Scheme. On employment in ISRO, other facilities are available such as medical facilities for self and dependants, subsidized canteen, transport allowance when official transport is not availed, limited housing facility for fresh entrants in lieu of HRA, Leave Travel Concession, Group Insurance, advances for purchase of conveyance, construction of house, etc as per Central Government orders.
Other Conditions/Instructions:
  • The posts are temporary, but likely to continue.
  • The number of posts indicated above are provisional and may vary depending on the actual requirements.

  • Candidates called for interview will have to produce all relevant original documents in proof of details furnished in their applications submitted on-line, at the time of interview. If any information furnished on-line is found to be wrong or false, the candidate will not be interviewed and TA will not be paid.
  • No TA will be paid for attending the Written Test.
  • ISRO reserves the right not to fill up all or any of the posts, if it so desires.
  • Only Indian Nationals need apply.

The Answer Keys will be published on the ISRO Website within three working days of the Written Test, i.e. on 08.05.2013. Objections, if any, received thereafter will not be considered at any cost.

Apart from above allowances Government Introduced Performance based Incentive Scheme for ISRO i.e some incentives are paid to ISRO employees based on their performance.

1. Organizational Performance Incentive : This Incentive will be decided based on the performance of  ISRO organisation. At present all ISRO employees are getting 20% of BASIC PAY as Organizational Performance Incentive.  which is calculated on month basis and paid twice in year ( paid for every sixth months). To get this incentive employee has to put less leaves. This Incentive will be reviewed for every 5 years and based on the ISRO performance it will be paid or it will be stopped. 


2.  Group Incentives : This incentive will be given to a group of people who have executed some good projects in ISRO (Not yet implemented)

3. Individual Incentives : This incentives will given to the individual person based on his performance. Generally All the technical people ( Scientists. Engineers, Scientific Assistants, Technicians ) will be called for a review for the promotion after 3 to 6 years depending their post and work record. At the time of promotion review, review committee will grant performance based variable  Increments to the employee.

For example Scientist/Engineer "SC" will be called for review to the post of Scientist/Engineer "SD" after 4 years. Interview will be conducted. Based on the performance (Work + Interview) along with promotion extra variable increments will be granted. these variable increments will be 1 to 6 based on the performance

each increment will be a fixed amount around 3% of entry basic.

So a Scientist/Engineer "SC" who did well in interview  ( with respect work and knowledge ) he will be granted extra 6 variable increments along with Scientist/Engineer "SD" Promotion
